The merging of streetart, calligraphy and activism

Join an evening with professor Sune Haughbølle and the Lebanese-born artist and activist Yazan Halwani. Learn about how Halwani works in the intersection of Western graffiti, Arabic calligraphy, and portrait painting. And how this relates to his activism.

Yazan Halwani started painting to protest against Lebanon's traditionally sectarian politics and the Lebanese Civil War (1975.1990). He celebrates Lebanon's unique heritage and the creation of a unified national identity of secularism. The mural Eternal Sabah in beirut's Hamra district is his most recognized work. In 2011 Yazan decided to change his style and started leveraging Arabic calligraphy and portraits of Arab People.
